Baby Citizen -
I met Nasir and Amira on a cold winter day. They had spent the last two months at a U.S. military base before coming to Bloomington. They rushed out of Afghanistan, with their two small children, with the Taliban hot on their heels and only the clothes on their backs. They were hidden in car trunks going through Taliban checkpoints. They were hunted because Nasir helped teach Americans about Afghan customs. Now Amira was four months pregnant. A few months later Amira would deliver the first American citizen in the family in a local hospital accompanied by a long-time resident volunteer who helped befriend the family. Amira was coached on both prenatal and post-partum practices by our volunteers and IU Health nurses. Both baby and mom are now healthy and happy.
