Education -
Fatima and Zara are middle-aged moms from Afghanistan. They are completely illiterate. When they were school age, the Taliban were in power – the first time. Fatima and Zara like all girls in Afghanistan at that time were denied schooling. Now in Bloomington they are learning how to read and write for the first time. Among their challenges is getting to and from the Broadview Learning Center for their English classes. Broadview, for them, is two bus rides away and nearly a four-hour round-trip commute. Volunteers regularly drive them so that they can continue to learn. Their smiles are contagious when they come out of class with some new words or expressions in their new language.
